Bienvenidos.

Parents, please read below, and email me if you can help out with some Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) activities.

8th grade- We have been reviewing last year's material for most of September, but now we are moving into Unit 7 of their text book, Ven Conmigo.  We also studied units on the beach, fruits, Ecuador, Frida Kahlo, and Mexican culture.  We study the news in Spanish, and speak Spanish almost exclusively.  i am very impressed with the students' reading comprehension and writing skills.  I believe that the best way to learn a new language is to use it as much as possible.

Día de los Muertos is a very fun holiday, and shows us a new way to view death and life.  It is coming up on November 1st and 2nd.  I want to spend some time learning about Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), and doing some folk art projects.  I would love some help.  I have sugar skull molds and recipes.  Could you come in during the week of October 27th-31st and help with the decorating of the sugar skulls, or with the making of Pan de Muertos (Bread of the Dead)?  Let me know.

7th grade- The students are moving along quickly through our curriculum.  I am so lucky to have native speakers of Spanish in both 7th grade classes.  We have learned greetings and salutations, the beach and marine life, fruits, asking and telling people how one is feeling, the alphabet, Frida Kahlo's art, and classroom objects.  We practice verbs, the date, and the weather regularly.  Next comes useful phrases, numbers, colors, dates, and phone numbers.

I want to spend some time over the next 3 weeks studying Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.  This is a holiday that is celebrated in Mexico and Central America.  It is very fun, and it gives us a new perspective on death and life.  I would love some help getting supplies together for a folk art activity, the making of skull masks.  They will be decorated brightly, not gory.  I need card stock in white or off-white for each student, plastic "jewels", feathers in bright colors, glitter glue, elastic, and other decorations.  We will also learn a dance for this holiday, study the vocabulary of this day, and read several stories.

Adiós,

Señora Grant-Richards
